Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling?

The six most common causes — from a dirty filter you can fix yourself to refrigerant leaks that need a licensed technician.

All tips & guides

Check the easy stuff first

Before you call anyone, check the thermostat (set to COOL, below room temperature), the air filter, and the breaker panel. A clogged filter alone can choke airflow enough that the system runs constantly without cooling.

The most common causes we find

  • Dirty air filter or blocked return vents
  • Frozen evaporator coil (often from low airflow or low refrigerant)
  • Refrigerant leak — the system never 'uses up' refrigerant, so low means a leak
  • Failed capacitor — the outdoor unit hums but the fan or compressor will not start
  • Dirty condenser coil — the outdoor unit cannot release heat
  • Duct leaks dumping cold air into the attic

If you see ice, turn it off

Ice on the copper lines or the indoor unit means the coil is frozen. Switch the system off (fan can stay ON to thaw faster) and call for service. Running a frozen system can destroy the compressor — the most expensive part in the unit.

When to call

If the filter, thermostat and breaker all check out and it is still blowing warm air, it is time for a diagnostic. We offer same-day service across Fort Myers, Cape Coral and the surrounding areas, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong before any work begins.
