Start with the 5,000 rule

Multiply the age of your system by the repair cost. If the result is over 5,000, replacement usually makes more sense. A 12-year-old system needing a $600 repair (12 × 600 = 7,200) is a replace candidate; a 5-year-old system needing the same repair (2,500) is worth fixing.

It is a rule of thumb, not a law — but it keeps the decision honest.

Age and refrigerant matter

Most systems last 10–15 years in Florida's heat and humidity. If your unit still uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out and increasingly expensive), even a moderate repair can be poor value because the refrigerant alone can cost more than the fix is worth.

Signs replacement is the smarter call

• Frequent repairs — more than one major repair in the last two years
• Uneven cooling or humidity problems even after repairs
• Steadily rising electric bills with no change in usage
• System is 12+ years old and needs a compressor or coil
